Bachelor Episode 7 Recap

On this week’s episode of The Bachelor, Nikki taught us how important fashion tape is, Andi demonstrated the importance of rhythm, and Sharleen reminded us that some times the right reasons include cerebral connections.

Let’s get started breaking down Episode 7.

Before Juan Pablo crashed the penthouse to whisk Sharleen off for the first one on one date, he confessed that he thinks she might be “the one.” Contain the gasps and sighs, there’s more. While Juan Pablo listed all of Sharleens amazing and flawless qualities, the bachelorette made her own list of all the reasons they should not be together. Mainly, she said there was no cerebral connection. Now you can gasp and sigh.

On the date, “Come Sea My City” Juan Pablo and Sharleen spent the day and night cruising the Miami coast kissing on the bow of an amazing yacht. And that was the date.

Nikki received the next one on one date: “Listen to my Heart Beat.” Juan Pablo met her near the beach and they went to a florist shop to put together flowers for Camila’s dance recital. Nikki admitted to the audience that she is falling in love with the bachelor, while her shirt is also falling lower and lower. At the recital Nikki met Juan Pablo’s family, his ex, Carla, and of course his daughter. Bachelor Nation immediately started petitioning for Carla to be the next Bachelorette. We’ll see….
After Nikki demonstrated her pediatric nurse skills with some Camila chitchat, the couple left for an evening picnic at the ballpark. If you were wondering, Nikki was able to find a lower V-cut shirt for the date.

Meanwhile, back at Bachelor Pad the girls all shrieked at Sharleen, “Why are you so fancy?” when she sat on the couch to fill them in on her conflicted emotions. In an honorable move, Sharleen decided it wasn’t right to take the spot of another girl who truly wanted to continue on the journey. After hugging everyone good-bye, she made her way to the bachelor’s suite where they had a conversation very reminiscent of a lot of Felicity episodes. There was so much whispering producers had to add subtitles. In the end, the two left on amicable, tear-stained terms and agreed on the break up. I was just glad the whispering was over.

For the last date of the episode, Juan Pablo picked up the group: Andi, Chelsie, Clare, and Renee for a seaplane ride to their own private beach for the day. During the date, Andi broke down. The emotions of the experience started weighing on her and she needed Juan Pablo’s reassurance. Chelsie stole the show when she shared the notes her parents gave her before she left home. Her mother’s advice: Don’t chew gum; Don’t drink more than two drinks; Keep your clothes on. Her dad’s advice: Have fun and do the opposite of what your mother said. Cute, Chelsie’s parents—super cute. Clare spent her alone time with Juan Pablo scaring him about a video her father left for her future husband. At the end of the day our bachelor chose Andi to spend the evening with and sent the other girls back to the penthouse. He and Andi hung out in Miami and attempted to dance the night away. Luckily, Andi admitted later she is not the best dancer. I would have for this to be the way she found out.

In the first real Bachelor Pad confrontation of the season, Nikki and Clare hashed out their differences with no resolution other than they agreed neither one of them paid for the suite. Clare snarked, “I want to hang out with Nikki like I want to get stung by a jellyfish.” Sting!

At the last group cocktail party all, but one of the girls donned tight, tropical colored dresses. That should have made Chelsie nervous—she had on black. Alas, she didn’t receive a rose and will not take Juan Pablo home to meet the funny parents who wrote such clever notes.

Next week we have Hometowns and Overnights in the same week!

Bachelor Episode 5 Recap

Last week my Bachelor recap was posted on memyselfandbabyi.com. In case you missed it, here's the blog to get you ready for tonight's episode in New Zealand!
Hit by Cupid's Arrow
T.A. Foster

I was thrilled when Lainie asked me if I would be interested in guest blogging on her site for this week’s Bachelor episode. Little did I know, I would land the episode of the season. I’m not a Bachelor expert, but I have been a fan since the show’s beginning, and out of all of the seasons I’ve seen this episode was a top five on my list. Cupid’s arrow was all over it.

Pull back the bow
The girls and Juan Pablo left the kraziness of Korea behind in search of love in Vietnam. Kat may have summed up the traveling portion of The Bachelor best when she remarked, “This is like Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? He travels and we follow.”

First One on One
The first date card arrived for Renee, asking the question, “Are we the right fit?” She answered by jumping up and down, declaring that she had butterflies, and revealing her feelings for Juan Pablo made her palms hurt. This is a case where Cupid completely missed his target—it’s supposed to be in the heart, not the hands.

In the quaint, humid, and sultry village of Hoi An Juan Pablo peddled Renee around in a rickshaw before taking her to a dress shop to have a custom dress made for their dinner date. There was lots of handholding while the couple oohed and ahhed over silky fabrics. In a completely chivalrous move, Juan Pablo darted across the street and bought a fan for his date so she wouldn’t melt during her dress measurements. It was nice touch, and Renee obviously appreciated the gesture. I’d say Cupid steered our bachelor in the right direction on that one.

Renee and Juan Pablo had a private dinner in an empty restaurant. It seems that air conditioning is a luxury not found in most of Hoi An. Renee was all hot and bothered again and Juan Pablo offered to blow cool air on her. Since the beginning of the date Renee gushed to the camera that she was determined to kiss Juan Pablo on this date. (She has been saying that since the first episode.) Unfortunately, the bachelor informed us that he wasn’t going to kiss Renee on the date—something about being worried about her mom status. After dinner the two strolled the streets and wound up near a candle float launch. Juan Pablo told Renee to make a wish and sail her candle boat out into the water. She made the number one mistake in wish making—she wished and told. That kiss was doomed from the minute she hopped in the rickshaw. In the end, sweet and positive Renee landed the date rose. I think Cupid was confused during this date—his aim was all over the place.

Aim
Group Date
“Can you go with the flow?” the group date card asked. My immediate answer for them was no, no they can’t, but that’s just not how things flow in Bachelorland. Sharleen, Kat, Andi, Chelsie, Danielle, Cassandra, Alli, and Clare were chosen for the group date. They arrived waterside and were told to pair off and climb into paddleboats that looked like big baskets. Everyone had a partner except for Clare, so she ended up in Juan Pablo’s basket. It’s times like these when not having friends in the house gives a girl a real advantage. Somehow Juan Pablo weaved the floating basket into a pile of reeds. Sneaking in a few kisses, he and Clare hid out while the other girls enjoyed their own one-on-one dates. Cupid was at it again—Chelsie said she and Alli had a romantic time.

After a strange pick-your-own-lunch date, the evening unfolded into a cocktail party. Everyone was stunned with Juan Pablo chose to spend his first alone time with Clare, who he had practically spent the entire group date with already. He led her to his suite where they swam in his private pool. How Clare knew to pack a bikini to a cocktail party, I don’t know, but give credit to a girl who is always fashionably prepared for any possible date scenario.

Apparently, while the bachelor and Clare were swimming in the pool, not really cold enough to cool them down, Cupid was having a few cocktails with the other girls. Once Juan Pablo started divvying his time with the other girls, the arrows started flying in all directions. First he kissed Sharleen on the beach, then Andi. But, in the end, Clare got the group date rose and the other girls were shocked, crushed, and disappointed.

Obviously, Clare was hit so hard by Cupid’s cocktail arrow, that even after getting the rose she went rogue and completely forgot her octopus fear. She proclaimed, “I didn’t want it to end.” Breaking the conventional show rules, she rang the bachelor’s doorbell at 4 a.m. and asked him to help her mark something off her Vietnam bucket list—swimming in the warm ocean. Juan Pablo didn’t hesitate. I mean, he didn’t even pause—he was in his swim trunks faster that you can say, “will you accept this rose.” He and Clare hit the waves, and this is where I fade to black. Discuss amongst yourselves what you think happened in the depths of the China Sea.

Second One on One
I tried my best to pay attention to Nikki’s “Let’s have a hell of a good time” date, but I was so distracted by her headband and by Clare’s sneak attack that I had a hard time giving her my total focus. I do think Nikki likes Juan Pablo, but she might have been more excited to get out of the house than to have a date. I would love to see one of the applications for the Bachelor, because I’m pretty sure in the blank where it lists fears, you should write in “adorable puppies,” otherwise you end up like Nikki strapped in a harness and headed straight for hell. After facing her fears and tackling the cliché hurdles that all relationships face, she and Juan Pablo rappelled two hundred feet, made out in a sweaty fury, and skipped off to a cave lunch date. I hope they saw some cool things like cave creatures, or the secrets to the Hellmouth while they were down there.

Later, the two met again in more proper cave attire for a romantic dinner—Juan Pablo in his yellow shirt and Nikki in a cute black cocktail dress. Nikki discussed her career in nursing, and Juan Pablo doled out the coveted date rose. With utter giddiness, she confessed that she was so happy it felt like she had been electrocuted. Cupid must have thought he was still on the group date and hit Nikki with too many arrows.

Fire
Cocktail Party/Rose Ceremony
The girls, who looked stunning, arrived by boat to a colorful lantern-laden cocktail party. (Set designers, whoever you are, you rocked that cocktail décor.) The excited, optimistic moods of the ladies quickly dissipated when Juan Pablo entered the room. The news that three girls were going home that night hit everyone particularly hard, and the tension immediately escalated. Kat’s heart sank, Chelsie’s confidence dropped, and Andi worried she might not be out of the physical zone. Cassandra and Sharleen had almost no screen time. Juan Pablo set aside time for Renee who assured him her eight-year-old would be completely fine with his mom kissing the bachelor—her argument totally worked—she finally got her kiss! Cupid must have aimed for her heart and not the hands this time.

Meanwhile, Juan Pablo debated whether it was fair to take Clare to the ocean. In his one-on-one talk with her he said, “what happened happened.” It was as if Cupid took the arrow and broke it in Clare’s face. Then Juan Pablo picked up the arrow and broke it into twenty pieces as he continued to tell her he regretted whatever it was they did in the ocean. Clare’s tears, apologies, and confusion flowed. She was visibly upset, but tried to play it off as bad allergies. Eventually, Juan Pablo coaxed her back to the group with smooth finesse, just in time for the rose ceremony.

For the first time Chris Harrison did not announce that this would be the most dramatic rose ceremony in Bachelor history, but I think it just might have been. Opportunity missed, ABC. Renee, Nikki, and Clare were safe with roses, but three girls were headed home. Juan Pablo had tears in his eyes for almost every rose he handed out, but when it came to the final one, he couldn’t hold back anymore. Danielle, Kelly, and Alli were left rose-less as all the girls hugged and exchanged tearful goodbyes.

Next week they’re off to New Zealand. Let’s hope Cupid’s arrow hits all the right targets in the land down under.

Bachelor Episode 4 Recap

Heart and Seoul

It’s time to grab your passports, fringe bikinis, and 21 suitcases—we’re headed to South Korea for the first of many globetrotting date trips with Juan Pablo.
After the girls adequately freaked out over their accommodations in Seoul, the first date card arrived. Chelsie, Cassandra, Elise, Danielle, Kat, and Nikki were chosen for group date, “Pop.” Nikki was upset she didn’t get a one-on-one with Juan Pablo. To add injury to Nikki’s insult, the date was a concert with the Korean K-pop band, 2NE1 (yes, I had to look that up) where the girls had to perform as the back up dancers. I didn’t know bands still performed in malls, I had a few Tiffany and Debbie Gibson flashbacks, but apparently, this is a huge deal in Korea. Kat and Cassandra busted out their professional dance moves and Juan Pablo lo—oved it. Nikki, not so much. In true unexpected fashion, Nikki wound up with the group date rose, stealing it from right under Kat’s runny nose.

The only one-on-one date of the episode was with Sharleen. The date card read, “Are you my Seoul mate?” Juan Pablo and Sharleen walked through a market, shopped for Camila, and ended up in a teahouse. Through some awkward attempts to give the bachelor a compliment, Sharleen mustered up, “You’re not bland.” Dramatic tension built during the evening date because Juan Pablo wanted to hear her operatic notes, and Sharleen informed us this is way too early in the relationship to sing to someone. Surprisingly, only a few minutes later she sang and Juan Pablo swooned. Despite the fact that Sharleen stated she has serious reservations about dating someone with children and hasn’t really thought about having them herself, she closed out the night with a rose.
The “Let’s get Krazy in Korea” date card arrived for Renee, Clare, Kelly, Andi, Lauren, and Alli. Lesson number one when you’re on a reality show: never tell anyone what you don’t want to do. Clare confessed she doesn’t want to eat octopus, so you know what happened next…yep, Juan Pablo gave her a bite to eat. The group had fish-nibbling pedicures, sang karoke, paddled in boats, and topped off the night with a group cocktail. Juan Pablo declared kissing was off limits for the date, that was until he spent some alone time with Clare and learned she threw up that little bit of octopus. So hot! Andi ended up with the date rose.
By rose ceremony time, tensions were high as Nikki and Clare started staking their claim on Juan Pablo. (It happens every season.) At the rose ceremony we lost Lauren and Elise.
Next week…Vietnam! What did you think of the episode? Is Clare too territorial? Should Sharleen continue the journey if she doesn't want to be a stepmother? Who is your favorite so far?

Bachelor Episode 3 Recap

I wanted to make sure I was in the right mindset to write this blog, so I grabbed my Juan Pablo-like plaid shirt and now I’m ready to go.

The first date card arrived for Cassandra stating, “Love is a wild ride.” In Bachelor land we know this usually means one of fifty possible vehicle scenarios: a roller coaster, a helicopter, matching motorcycles, right? No, so wrong—it meant Juan Pablo was about to take Cassandra in a Jeep that doubles as a boat! It was a nice plug for Watercar. (For those of you who are interested in adding a Watercar to your summer fun, I checked their website and the complete package vehicle is $135K.)

 Source: Watercar

Cassandra mentioned at least three times that this was her first date since she was eighteen. She was extremely nervous. Juan Pablo did his best to ease her nerves by cooking dinner for her at home, dancing in the living room, and exchanging pictures of their children. She happily accepted the date rose.

Back at Bachelor Pad, the group date card arrives while Cassandra and Juan Pablo work on their kids’ scrapbooks. Elise was convinced that she was going to get the next one-on-one date with Juan Pablo because Chelsie, who is twenty-four, is just too young for him.

I think we all knew at the beginning of the season, Juan Pablo was going to sneak in as much soccer as possible on his dates. Group date, “Let’s Kick It,” didn’t disappoint, unless you were one of the girls who actually got kicked in the face by the ball. Unlike most of the competitive group dates, the winning team didn’t have special time with Juan Pablo. It was nice that he included all the girls in the empty soccer stadium cocktail party. If you need ideas on where you might want to kiss someone in a stadium, pay special attention to this date because Juan Pablo is a master of the concession stand kiss along with the coaching kiss in the middle of the field. In the end, the girl who got just the hug and great conversation, also got the rose. Way to go, Nikki!

When a date card asks, “Do you trust me?” the answer should always be no. It’s like no one on the show has ever watched previous seasons. Chelsie is excited about her first one-on-one date. She and Juan Pablo start it off right with a little car dancing, and then have lunch at a Venezuelan restaurant. After a lovely post-lunch stroll, Juan Pablo deposits Chelsie in front of a platform. It’s not just any platform—it’s on a bridge—and he wants her to bungee off of it. Chelsie says to the cameras, “This is the high dive on crack.” Ah, I felt for her as someone who is terrified of heights. We all knew where this was going, though. Juan Pablo consoled, coaxed, and comforted Chelsie in her cute red-striped Toms right off that bridge. In true heightened-experience form, Chelsie told us that if you can jump off a bridge with someone, you can pretty much do anything. So true, Chelsie. So true.

The girl definitely deserved a night out after she was terrorized most of the afternoon. The two ended up having dinner at Pasadena Town Hall, and then you’ll never guess—wait, you guessed it. That’s right, a private concert. This time I knew the singer and it seemed like Chelsie did too. She sang along to Billy Currington’s Hey Girl, while she and Juan Pablo danced. She earned that date rose. I just hope she got to hear Juan Pablo say at the end of the night, “She’s a keeper.”

The next morning Juan Pablo snuck into Bachelor Pad and made breakfast for all of the girls. I loved seeing which ones of them freaked out about having no makeup. I won’t tell you which camp I would be in. Without warning, our Bachelor canceled the cocktail party and decided they should have a pool party instead. Of course, he couldn’t spend an entire day at the house without starting a chain reaction of crying, but emotions do run high when everyone’s in a fringe bikini.

To wrap up the episode…Lucy, who we just didn’t get to see enough of, and Christy, who we didn’t get to know at all, both left after all the roses were handed out.

What were your favorite moments? Do you think Juan Pablo’s on the right track?

Bachelor Episode 2 Recap

For the last few years I have been a part of a Bachelor/ette fantasy league. Each season, we draft after the debut episode and each week I keep score and scrupulous notes on all the details of the dates. It’s no wonder that all of this Bachelor note-taking turned into me writing a book that is very Bachelor-themed. In honor of the Juan-uary release of London Falling, I thought I’d share some of my weekly fantasy league recaps with all of you. I don't do a full play-by-play, but hopefully enough to keep you up to date each week.

The Bachelor Episode 2, January 13, 2014 Recap

Holy hot tubs, electric dancing, and really emotional girls...episode two was pretty remarkable.
                                    Source: ABC Local
The first one-on-one date was with Clare. The date card said, "Let's Chill." What better way to do that than in a fake winter wonderland in the middle of L.A.? Juan Pablo blindfolded Clare and drove her to a secret location complete with snow, a hot tub, and a private concert. Clare and Juan Pablo danced the night away in their bathing suits to the tunes of none other than Josh Krajcik. (Insert honesty, I had no idea who he was.) It was a little like Baywatch meets Hot Tub Time Machine. Clare did a have a point-packed night: emotional crying very reminiscent of Ashlee Frazier, hot tub kissing, a concert, and the coveted date rose. All in all, this was an amazing date.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch...Lucy goes topless.

                                    Source: ABC Local
Kat lucked out with a date card that stated "I can feel the electricity." She did an excellent job of concealing her disappointment when their private jet trip turned into a neon dance party. She actually had on fluorescent pink eye shadow and clothes that blinked like a Jillians dance floor. Kat constantly told us how much electricity there was between her and her "Latin lover." I have a feeling we’re going to hear that ALL season from ALL of the girls. She accepted her date rose onstage in front of hundreds of neon fans.

                                             Source: ABC
Group dates are always awkward and intimidating. On that note, the "Say Cheese" photo shoot group date didn’t disappoint. I knew Kelly was getting the rose from the beginning because of her career as a "dog lover."

As part of a charity effort for The Best Friends Animal Society, the group posed for pictures with dogs to promote the Best Friends focus on no-kill animal shelters. However, in the most uncharitable spirit, some of the girls were deprived of actual clothes or costumes. Elise battled with her choice to accept her naked posing fate, and settled on asking Lucy to swap out and wear her nude costume for her. Well played, Elise. We learned Cassandra has a two-year-old son and Victoria can't handle any alcohol.

Even though the situation on the roof during Victoria’s alcohol outburst distracted Juan Pablo from the more focused ladies, it was great to see how he handled the situation. You can tell a lot about a bachelor by the compassion he has for others in difficult circumstances.

Juan Pablo sent Victoria home before the rose ceremony. Amy L and Chantel were left rose-less.

Let me know what you think. Who are your favorites so far? Who do you think will cause the most problems in the house?

Helen and Holden- Time Spell Hidden Chapter

Hidden Time Spell Chapter

For those of you who haven’t read Time Spell, the hidden chapter you’re about to read is an early account of Helen and Holden Chadsworth. It will give you a bit of insight into this dynamic couple who plays a pivotal role in the story within the story of the book.

The Chadsworths surface in 1968 when Ivy first observes them in Las Vegas. This excerpt provides a little background into how they first met in the early 1950s, and sets the stage for their very tumultuous relationship. It’s told from Helen’s perspective, so the dialogue and observations are different from Ivy’s first-person accounts in the Spell Series. Don’t worry there are no major plot spoilers. This is truly a hidden chapter and can’t be found in any copies of Time Spell. I hope you enjoy it!

Helen and Holden—Time Spell Hidden Chapter

Stonevine, Connecticut, 1952

Helen

I strummed my fingers along the edge of the baby grand piano, and exhaled a stream of smoke into the already stuffy room. I nodded at George as his fingers banged out the notes to Blue Tango on the piano. The band was taking a ten-minute break and George jumped at the chance to show off his play list on the ivories.

This party was dull. Carolyn Crawford’s engagement was the talk of the town, but this soiree was turning into a drag. Her parents had filled their upper Stonevine home with the town’s most prestigious, wealthy, and affluent families to celebrate their only child’s upcoming wedding. Of course my family, the VonRues, were included. No doubt, we were at the top of the list.

The VonRues were at the top of everyone’s list. My father, Charles, had a hand in the success of Stonevine. There wasn’t anyone at this party who didn’t owe him something, and he knew it.

One of the waiters walking by offered a bubbling glass of champagne. I greedily accepted the chilled beverage and surveyed the room for a rescue from George’s singing. He had moved on to an Eddie Fisher song. Where was Peter? Why couldn’t I find him in this crowd?

I did my best to take tiny sips of the champagne, but it was sweet and cold and I was bored. I knocked the glass back and heard an instant chuckle from over my right shoulder. Someone was watching me. I turned to face the man who had found my boredom so amusing.

I caught my breath and reigned in my smile. Surely my perfect, creamy skin had turned bright pink as I flushed from the thoughts of him and those devilish eyes. I had never seen eyes that color before. It was like flecks of diamonds were glinting at me. Who was he? I was confident I knew everyone Carolyn invited. Maybe he was a cousin or perhaps someone’s date. Whoever the stranger was, he certainly wasn’t from Stonevine.

Daringly, I thought about introducing myself or asking him if maybe he played the piano, but the instant I glided forward he turned his back to me and began shamelessly flirting with the girls crowding around him. Really, those girls are indecent—throwing themselves at a man like that. Let them make fools of themselves. Who would want to bother with someone like him? His tux didn’t fit quite right, he laughed a little too loudly, and it looked like he had straight bourbon in his glass. He most certainly was not from any of the families I had spent my life socializing with.

I reached for one more glass of champagne floating by on another waiter’s silver tray and turned toward the door. I stepped on to the Crawfords’ front porch and inhaled the Connecticut spring air. I wanted to shake off how that man stared at me, but at the same time, I wanted him to do it again.

Looking through the windows of the house, I saw my friends, arm in arm, gathering around George and his silly singing. Carolyn and Phillip were at the center of the circle. Truly, they made a lovely Stonevine couple. That will be Peter and me in a few months.

My mother was already planning the precise details of our engagement announcement. She had chosen my deep blue cocktail dress for the evening—she liked to plan. I couldn’t believe it when she told me it was the same one Princess Margaret had worn. As if it was designed especially for my tall thin frame, the folds of the silk hugged my hips swishing like an airy cloud when I walked. We were waiting until after Carolyn’s party to break the news to our friends. Stonevine can only handle one lavish wedding at a time. And the VonRues were not going to let my engagement to Peter Willoughby be anything less than spectacular.

I sighed and leaned against the column closest to me. At nineteen, I knew I was ready for marriage. Two years at Briarcliff had taught me how to achieve the necessary duties my socialite wife status called upon me to perform. All Briarcliff girls knew how to do those things. Me, I just knew how to do them better.

Peter would give me a wonderful life. We’d honeymoon in Paris for the summer then come back to Stonevine and find a charming home, probably close to my parents. Father had offered Peter a position at VonRue Holdings as the Vice President of Operations. There would be parties, bridge every week, and trips to the city for the theater. We had already decided we would have one boy and one girl. What more could I ask for? It was all planned, all settled, and all tidy.

I pulled out a cigarette from my matching blue clutch when the door opened and a giggling girl scurried past me with an eager suitor in tow. Her curls bobbed up and down as they darted into the shadows created by the corner of the house. “Shhh.” She giggled some more. I don’t think they saw me perched on the porch.

I had no interest in listening to this nonsense. I stuffed the unlit cigarette in the silk purse and turned to rejoin the party. I might as well search for Peter. Shouldn’t he be looking for me? Irritated my future husband hadn’t noticed my absence, I huffed and pulled on the door handle.

“Whoa, pretty kitty. Where are you going in such a hurry?”

He was there, filling up the doorframe in his ill-fitted tux. The beautiful stranger with the mesmerizing eyes. The reason I needed fresh air. The man who made me lose my senses for an enthralling five seconds. And there were only inches between us.

“Cat got your tongue?” He teased.

I snapped back, “Certainly not. I’m looking for my…my…date.” I tried to step past him, but he remained planted in the doorway. “Excuse me. I’m trying to return to the party.”

He laughed. “Now, just wait. If you have to go looking for your date, it’s apparent he’s the wrong Joe for you.”

My eyes dropped to the floor. I was equally vexed and embarrassed that this man I didn’t even know said exactly what I was thinking.

“You don’t know Peter. He’s quite the gentleman and quite the catch. He would never leave in the middle of a conversation. That would be rude, wouldn’t it?” I glared at the stranger and his perfectly carved cheekbones. He looked like a flawless statue I had seen in my art history books. “I’m sure he can’t just break away from his current company. Besides, I’m more than capable of entertaining myself.”

He laughed again, and I absorbed every vibrating note ricocheting between us. “I can see that you are. Defend him if you like, but if my date was as gorgeous and sexy as you are, I wouldn’t let you out of my sight—not even for a second.” His eyes dipped toward the V in the sweetheart line of my dress.

Did he just say I was sexy? Out loud so everyone within earshot of the Crawfords’ porch could hear him? I felt his pale icy eyes undressing me right out of my couture gown. My head was spinning. This outsider was crossing all kinds of lines I couldn’t even fathom. He was dangerous. He radiated something undeniably sinful and powerful. I smiled as I felt it encircle me in slow undulating rings.

I took a step back, and then another so that the tall handsome guest had room to close the door. There was just enough light from the windows to allow me to see his wicked smile and captivating eyes, even though most of him was a mysterious silhouette cloaked in darkness.

In one long stride, he cut the distance between us, and his hand reached for the column my back was now pressed against. I heard the band start up again, and the words to You Belong To Me suspended in the air between us.

Avoiding the bright headlights beaming onto the porch as a car cruised past the party, I turned my head to the side. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw and felt the intensity of his stare bearing down on me. I no longer heard the incessant giggles of the couple in the shadows. We were alone.

“I guess I should properly introduce myself. That’s how you all do things out here in Connecticut, right?” I nodded lightly, eagerly waiting for the name to tumble from his perfectly shaped lips. The name of the man who was holding me between a place of balance and the edge of a spiraling dark cliff. Tipping my chin toward him, I leaned in closer, and traced the curves of his mouth with my eyes. I couldn’t stop staring—wondering what it would feel like on mine. He was taunting me, dragging this charade on for what felt like endless tension-laden seconds. “I’m Holden Chadsworth.”

I cleared my throat. “Helen VonRue.” My rehearsed and rigid social upbringing bubbled to the surface. Instinctively, I extended my gloved hand to take his, but he brushed it aside, knocking it out of his way. I bristled at the rough contact, but felt prickly, intoxicating heat stirring within me.

His voice sliced through the air between us. “Now that formalities are out of the way let me show you how we introduce ourselves where I’m from.” Both slapping him and kissing him seemed like acceptable solutions to quell the burning sensation taking hold of me. Searching my instincts for direction, I felt his presence arresting my every decision. I didn’t recognize the hunger trembling through my body or the overwhelming craving for this outsider to touch me. What was he doing to me?

He pressed his lips against mine roughly, and I squirmed from the weight of his body crushing into me. I tried to free myself from his overbearing frame, but dropped my protest when his arms encircled my waist and pulled me toward him. I knew at any moment someone from the partymaybe my parents—maybe Peter—could walk onto the porch and see me lip to lip with this stranger, pressed against the Crawfords’ column, not resisting the touches that should only happen behind closed doors. But there was something wickedly delicious about Holden Chadsworth, and I was willing to taste every last drop—no matter what the consequences.
